Cam Ranh: The Quiet Vietnamese Destination We Never Planned to Visit, and Fell in Love With

Cam Ranh is a beautiful and peaceful coastal destination in central Vietnam, located just south of Nha Trang. I first came across Cam Ranh while planning our trip and marked it as a possible stop on our itinerary. At the time, I thought there was a chance we might have to skip Hoi An since we were traveling during the off-season, and Cam Ranh became our backup plan.
As it turned out, while we were in Ha Long Bay, reports started coming in about a major typhoon moving westward toward north-central Vietnam. At that point, we realized we needed to rethink our route and abandon our original plan of continuing further north.
We arrived in Cam Ranh with no expectations at all. We booked a hotel at the last minute and decided to give ourselves four days of pure relaxation—beach time, rest, and a chance to recharge. Cam Ranh is still relatively unknown to many international travelers, and I'm excited to share our experience and tips from our stay, especially from the perspective of traveling as a family with two young children.

Best Time to Visit Cam Ranh
The best time to visit Cam Ranh is between February and August, when the weather is generally stable, warm, and sunny, with little rainfall and calm seas—perfect for a beach getaway. March through May is considered especially ideal, offering pleasant temperatures and lower humidity levels.
From September to January, the region enters its wetter season, and there is a higher chance of tropical storms and typhoons. However, even during these months, you can still enjoy stretches of good weather, particularly if you're looking for fewer crowds and more affordable hotel rates. We visited Cam Ranh in late September and experienced warm temperatures, with occasional rain showers throughout parts of the day.
Getting to Cam Ranh
The easiest and fastest way to reach Cam Ranh is by flying into Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR), which is conveniently located within Cam Ranh itself. The airport is just a 10–15 minute drive from the area's beachfront resorts, making arrivals and departures exceptionally smooth and hassle-free.
If you're traveling from elsewhere in Vietnam, direct domestic flights to Cam Ranh are available from major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc. The airport also serves a growing number of international routes, making it an increasingly accessible destination for travelers seeking a relaxing beach escape.
Where to Stay in Cam Ranh
Most of Cam Ranh’s hotels and resorts are located directly along the coastline, offering easy access to the beach and stunning ocean views. The area is home to a wide range of large, upscale resorts, making it a popular destination for travelers seeking a relaxing seaside escape.
Since we were looking for a quiet break—just a few days to unwind, slow down, and enjoy some true beach time—we opted for a more intimate and spacious resort rather than a massive hotel complex. That’s how we discovered The Anam Cam Ranh, which turned out to be an absolute slice of paradise.
This beautiful beachfront resort features elegant villas set among lush tropical gardens, with direct access to a long, well-maintained stretch of beach. The property offers three swimming pools: an adults-only pool, a family pool, and a dedicated children’s pool. There’s also a lovely Kids Club, which proved invaluable on the days when the weather wasn’t ideal for spending time outdoors.
The dining experience was another highlight. The resort boasts an excellent signature restaurant, along with an exceptionally generous breakfast buffet featuring a wide variety of options. Guests can also order from an à la carte menu throughout the day. Combined with the attentive service, peaceful atmosphere, and thoughtful attention to detail, it all made for a truly memorable stay.
We absolutely loved every moment at The Anam Cam Ranh, it was exactly the kind of relaxing getaway we had been dreaming of.

What to Do in Cam Ranh
Cam Ranh is located just 40 minutes from Nha Trang, one of Vietnam’s most popular coastal cities. While Cam Ranh is known for its peaceful beaches and laid-back atmosphere, Nha Trang offers a completely different experience—a lively city with bustling streets, a vibrant waterfront, and a variety of attractions.
If you're staying in Cam Ranh, it's definitely worth taking a half-day or full-day trip to Nha Trang to experience a different side of Vietnam's coastline. You’ll find a wider selection of restaurants, cafés, markets, shopping areas, and cultural landmarks, along with more active beaches and a livelier atmosphere than the tranquil shores of Cam Ranh.
The contrast between the two destinations makes them a perfect combination: Cam Ranh for relaxation and luxury resort living, and Nha Trang for sightseeing, dining, and city life.
A small and peaceful Buddhist temple located in the heart of Nha Trang. At the top of the complex stands an impressive white Buddha statue, accompanied by open views overlooking the city and the surrounding area. It's a pleasant stop for a short visit, offering both a glimpse into Vietnam’s spiritual heritage and a lovely viewpoint that’s easy to reach without much effort.

One of the most impressive historical landmarks in Nha Trang, the Po Nagar Cham Towers date back to between the 7th and 12th centuries and were built by the ancient Cham civilization. The complex was dedicated to Po Nagar, the goddess of the earth, fertility, and the sea, who remains an important figure in local culture and spirituality.
Perched on a small hill overlooking the river, the site features beautifully preserved red-brick towers and intricate architectural details that showcase the craftsmanship of the Cham people. In addition to its historical significance, the complex offers lovely views of Nha Trang and the surrounding landscape.
The site is easy to explore in under an hour, making it a convenient stop even for families traveling with young children. If you're visiting Nha Trang, it's well worth adding to your itinerary for a glimpse into Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage. Entrance tickets can be purchased at the gate.

Final Thoughts
Looking back, Cam Ranh was one of the most pleasant surprises of our Vietnam trip. What started as an unplanned detour quickly became one of the most relaxing and enjoyable parts of our journey.
With its quiet beaches, clean and well-maintained surroundings, excellent resorts, and convenient location just minutes from the airport, Cam Ranh offers the perfect setting to slow down and recharge. The added bonus of being only a short drive from Nha Trang means you can easily combine peaceful beach days with a bit of sightseeing, dining, and local attractions whenever you're in the mood for something more active.
For travelers looking to balance their Vietnam itinerary with a few days of genuine relaxation, sunshine, and beachfront luxury, Cam Ranh is an excellent choice—even during the off-season. Sometimes, the destinations we never planned to visit turn out to be exactly the ones we needed most.
