Galle is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka and the biggest in the southern region of the country. It is the capital of the Galle district and served as a major port for centuries. Originally built by the Portuguese, Galle flourished under Dutch rule in the 18th century. The Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest fort in Asia built by a foreign power. The old town of Galle is an architectural treasure, and the fort area is one of the most touristy and inviting spots, featuring some of Sri Lanka’s best restaurants, luxury hotels, boutique shops, and souvenir stores.

When visiting Galle, choosing your accommodation depends on the type of experience you’re looking for. Staying inside the historic fort allows for an urban, cultural experience, with close access to restaurants, shops, and bars. On the other hand, staying outside the fort in one of the nearby resorts provides access to beaches and a quiet, relaxing vacation atmosphere.
