Exploring Sigiriya, Sri Lanka: A Two-Day Itinerary with Recommendations

Sigiriya, also known as Lion's Rock, is an ancient fortress and archaeological site located in central Sri Lanka. This stunning rock formation, a 200-meter-high volcanic plug, served as a Buddhist monastery in the 14th century. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s, Sigiriya is a must-visit destination for history and nature enthusiasts. I first explored Sigiriya in 2015 and was mesmerized by its beauty, so revisiting it during my recent family trip was non-negotiable. Here’s my detailed guide to spending two days in and around Sigiriya.

Sigiriya Sri Lanka travel guide

Getting There

The easiest way to reach Sigiriya is by car. A drive from Colombo to Sigiriya takes approximately 3.5 hours. Sigiriya was our first stop on a two-week trip through Sri Lanka, and we arrived directly from Negombo, near the airport.

Where to Stay

While Sigiriya’s Lion's Rock is the primary attraction, the nearby town is small and lacks vibrant nightlife. Many travelers opt to stay in neighboring areas within a short drive from the site.

We stayed at Heritance Kandalama, located south of Sigiriya near Dambulla. This stunning eco-luxury hotel is set amidst a nature reserve and offers breathtaking views of either Sigiriya Rock or the nearby lake. The property features Three pools, A restaurant ans A spa

Its strategic location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions.
