There's no disputing the quality of Italian food—Italian cuisine is famed for its incredible flavors and nearly unparalleled diversity. Traveling across Italy reveals distinct differences in traditional dishes from one region to another. I found that pizza in Rome isn’t quite the same as in Naples, and that Roman desserts differ from the popular sweets in Sicily. Burrata originated in the Apulia region, while the finest balsamic vinegar hails from Modena. One thing that seems consistent throughout Italy, though, is a lack of emphasis on breakfast. Breakfast cafes are rare, and Italians love their coffee but usually drink it standing by the bar, accompanied by a small pastry as their morning ritual. So, what’s on the menu in Rome?
Lunch or Dinner in Rome
Taverna Trilussa Trastevere – A classic, old-fashioned restaurant where the delicious aroma of truffles fills the air as you walk in. Like many Italian restaurants, the portions here are generous and rich.
La Pecora Pazza – Serving up Italian pizza cut into square slices and sold by weight. This small spot is perfect for a quick lunch break with a great selection of tasty pizzas.
Dal Toscano Restaurant – The real reason to head toward the Vatican area. This local-favorite, non-touristy restaurant is always packed at lunchtime, so it's best to reserve a table. The menu features in-house aged meats and an assortment of authentic Italian pasta dishes.
Michelin-starred Glass Hostaria – One of Rome's highly recommended Michelin-starred restaurants, led by Chef Cristina Bowerman. The menu is unique and inventive without being overly complex. Reservations are a must.
Retrobottega – In my opinion, the best restaurant in Rome. This super-special spot is split into two relatively small rooms, each centered around a bar seating 6-8 diners. You choose between two set tasting menus—meat or vegetarian. It was one of the most memorable meals I had in Rome. A must-visit restaurant.
Cocktail Bar
Mimi e Coco Trast – A cocktail bar with an extensive drink menu, also serving food.
Gelato
Ice Cream Shop La Strega Nocciola – Perfect, highly recommended gelato! While great gelato isn’t hard to find in Rome, this is truly one of the best we tasted.
Gelateria da Costanza – Excellent gelato near the Colosseum.
